Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Informatics (RTT)

1 Assistant Professor position
(Deadline May 9th, 2024 13:00 )
Profile

The profile of the sector 01/B1 is characterized by scientific and didactic-training activities in the fields of computer science research and information theory, placed at the basis of the computer science approach to the study of problems and, jointly, the design, production and use of computer systems for innovation in society. Special attention is paid to the method, based on modeling, formalization, and experimental verification. Therefore, the field includes, alongside all basic and general aspects, the algorithmic (algorithm design and analysis, computability and complexity, information theory, codes and cryptography), logical, semantic and methodological foundations of computer science, including classical and quantum computational models; the systems skills necessary to model and design (logically, technically and economically appropriate) processors, distributed systems, networks, telematics systems (reliability, performance and security of computer and telematics systems), languages (programming environments and methodologies, software engineering), information systems, databases and information access systems. Finally, the profile includes application and experimental areas related to innovative uses of computer science, such as image and sound processing, computer recognition and vision, neural networks, artificial intelligence and soft computing, computational simulation, computational graphics, user-computer interaction, and multimedia systems. Competencies in this area cover the methodologies and tools of computer science that provide the conceptual and technological basis for the variety of applications required in the Information Society for the organization, management, and access to information and knowledge by individuals and private and public organizations and businesses; they also cover all institutional aspects of basic computer science.

Activity

RESEARCH

The research will take place within the framework of the Economic and Digital Resilience (RED) project and the initiatives promoted by the Open Lab(https://openlab.imtlucca.it), a state-of-the-art infrastructure conceived within the framework of the Italian Program for Departments of Excellence 2023-2027. This framework provides for active synergy with the researchers involved, aiming for fruitful and multidisciplinary collaboration. The Open Lab is distinguished by its diverse range of activities, ranging from custom research design and field data collection to the implementation of targeted solutions and policy strategy development. Through the use of experimental, quasi-experimental, and observational methodologies, the Open Lab aims to enrich the fabric of research conducted by the IMT School's multidisciplinary community, with a special emphasis on promoting the economic, digital, and technological resilience of socio-economic systems.

The specific research activities envisaged involve strengthening the School's core competencies in systems modeling, analysis and control by developing and employing methodologies and tools with solid mathematical foundations such as:

- active learning, clustering, online learning, ranking, reinforcement learning, supervised, semi-supervised and self-supervised learning, and time series analysis;

  • Deep Learning architectures, generative models, and deep learning by reinforcement;
  • statistical learning theory;
  • Probabilistic inference (Bayesian methods, graphical models, Monte Carlo methods);
  • Reliable machine learning (accountability, causality, fairness, privacy, robustness);
  • applications of machine learning in fields such as data science, economics, humanities, medical sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences.

TEACHING

Teaching may take place within the scope of the School's educational activities relevant to the required profile, including: the doctoral programs in Systems Science, in Economics, Analytics and Decision Sciences, in Management of Digital Transformation, and in Cybersecurity; the inter-university master's degree program in Software Science and Technology; and the joint master's degree program in Data Science and Statistical Learning.

Teaching activities may include supervision of doctoral students.

THIRD MISSION.

Planned Third Mission activities concern technology and competency transfer to business and society, especially in the context of digital transformation, including in the context of the RED project and the Open Lab.
