The San Francesco Complex

The San Francesco complex (with an indoor surface of 6.803 m2) was inaugurated in July of 2013. The beautifully and painstakingly restored Complex includes the San Francesco Church (to be used for major events), the Guinigi Chapel (for seminars and smaller events), the Sagrestia (for seminars and meetings), classrooms, residential facilities for students, short-to medium-term housing for visiting faculty, office spaces for faculty and staff, the canteen, and numerous internal and external areas for study and socialization. PhD students are offered free housing in the San Francesco Complex and free access to the canteen.

Classrooms

The San Francesco Complex holds two classrooms: classroom n. 1 (59.9 m2), and classroom n. 2 (59 m2), which can both accommodate 25 participants and a teacher. Both classrooms are equipped with a blackboard, video projector and retractable screen and a desktop computer.

Beyond the two classrooms, the following rooms are also used to hold lessons, seminars and other types of events:

  • the Cappella Guinigi Auditorium (194 m2), which can accommodate 120 participants plus 5 presenters, and is equipped with a sophisticated lighting and audio/visual system;
  • the Sagrestia (127 m2) which can accommodate approximately 30 people, and is also used as a space for lessons and seminars, equipped with a video projector and whiteboard;
  • the Sala della Botte (43 m2), which can accommodate 12 people and is used for lessons, seminars and meetings, equipped with a video projector and whiteboard.
Other spaces available for teaching, research and Third Mission activities

6 study rooms available in the San Francesco Complex which are exclusively for the Schools students and junior researchers, for a total of 65 individual workstations;

The Ex-Refettorio (250 sqmt). Commissioned by IMT School and based on a shared project, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca soundproofed and furnished the “Ex Refettorio” of the San Francesco Complex (previously used as a venue for workshops and conferences), turning it into an open space with 22 workstations that is currently used by the School’s researchers.

Canova Hall (343, 97 m2), managed by Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, and usually used for meetings, conferences and institutional lunches and dinners.

San Francesco Church (1347.29 m2), managed by Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, used by the IMT School in occasion of conference and institutional events (such as lectio magistralis and inauguration of academic year). This space, rich in history and art, can accommodate up to 584 people and is equipped with a fixed audiovisual system with a direction station and stage set up with a table and podium for the speakers;

Cloisters of San Francesco Complex (391.94 m2), often used for events related to the teaching and research activities of the School (such as on the occasion of the "Researchers' Night" and poster sessions).
Laboratories

The MUSAM-LAB is an experimental laboratory that compliments that modelling and computational structures within the MUSAM - Multi-Scale Analysis of Materials Research Unit. It is located in the ex-Officina Aromataria within the San Francesco Complex, and is supported by the Starting Teaching and scientific structures for students Grant IDEAS CA2PVM of the European Research Council. The laboratory is open to engineers, physicists and mathematicians for studying deformation, fracture, fatigue, contact and structural integrity of heterogeneous materials and structures with multiscale and multi-physics computational and experimental methods.

The Innovation Center Lab Neuroscience (ICLN) laboratory, located in the San Francesco Complex, covers an area of approximately 50 m2 and contains an office and a meeting room. There are 10 workspaces with 25-30 monitors in addition to a 75 monitor to use for video presentations. 

Student Residence

The University Residence dedicated to the students of the IMT School consists of 41 double rooms with bathroom and 13 single rooms with private bathroom. It is able to accommodate up to 95 students. Students who have been assigned accommodation in the University Residence can enter with their institutional badge.
Guesthouse

IMT Guesthouse (for teachers, researchers, speakers of seminars/conferences and IMT School guests in their various capacities) is composed of 4 single rooms with private bathroom, 4 studios with double bedroom, cooking area and bathroom and 5 two-room flats with double bedroom, kitchen-living room and bathroom. They are all finely furnished and equipped.

Guests of the Guesthouse can access to their accommodation with a magnetic badge. They can pick it up to the San Francesco Reception (open 24h and 365 days a year) at their check-in.

Canteen

The IMT School canteen is located in San Francesco Complex and it is open 350 days a year. From September 3, 2018, canteen service is managed by ARDSU (Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario). The winning economic operator provides the service contracted out with a tendering procedure carried out by ARDSU itself.

The IMT School Canteen is equipped with an indoor kitchen that is managed by the winning company. It takes care of meals administration and the cleaning of all the premises that the School has given to it free of charge (total area of 647.72m2) together with the furnishings, equipment and relevant network infrastructures.

The area dedicated to the consumption of meals has a capacity of 88 seats and is open to users for lunch (from 12:00 to 2:30 pm) and for dinner (from 7:30 to 9.00 pm), every day of the week. Canteen service is accessible to all the School internal users (students, professors and researchers, IMT staff) as well as external users (employees of local authorities, secondary and high school teachers and students and people that participate to the events that take place in the spaces of the Complex) authorized by ARDSU (for further details contact ristorazione.pi@dsu.toscana.it).

IMT School users are required to book meals through the dedicated Intranet tool, which allows them to choose the 30-minute timeslot for consumption on site or the take away option.

Leisure and well-being

The San Francesco Complex is equipped with relaxation areas. Students have access to:

  • some coffee areas;
  • a dedicated turkish bath;
  • a small fitness centre;
  • a common room featuring couches, a TV, and a ping-pong table.
Kitchenette
Students and guests have access to a kitchenette with a cooker, a microwave and a dishwasher.
Laundry Area
A laundry area, equipped with four token washer-driers and a token dispenser, is located in the basement of the San Francesco Complex. Laundry facilites are available for IMT School students and for the Guesthouse guests.
