The discipline studies the methods and the technologies for processing information (data and signals) tailored to the automation (i.e., planning, management, and control in an automatic way) of plants, processes, and dynamic systems in general. Examples include industrial production processes (both continuous production and manufacturing), automatic operating machines (including robotic systems), transport systems, energy production systems, avionic systems, and environmental systems. Despite the physical-structural differences of these systems, the various process classes mentioned above can be represented, modeled, simulated, and finally managed and controlled by using methodological tools that do not depend on the particular application domain.
