History of Medieval Philosophy - The philosophical encyclopaedia in Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā)

1 Assistant Professor position
(Deadline July 28th, 2025 13:00 )
Fields

History of medieval philosophy; Arabic philosophy; Arabic-Islamic studies; Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā).

Profile

The contract holder will deal with the following topics, in synergy with additional staff recruited as part of the research project. I) A systematic search for references to authors, works and disciplines within the Šifāʾ, in the form of: i) citations of authors and works; ii) “internal” cross-references connecting the various sections of the work; iii) expressions used by Avicenna to refer to philosophical and scientific disciplines and their practitioners, as well as to the corresponding canonical texts of the ancient tradition. The aim is to understand, from Avicenna's own words, what his consideration was of authors, fields of investigation and topics relevant to the structuring of the Šifāʾ. II) A comparison of the results obtained in the case of the Šifāʾ with the data obtainable from al-Ḥikma al-ʿArūḍiyya and Dānešnāme-ye ʿAlāʾī, with the possibility of further extending the analysis to Avicenna's great medical encyclopaedia, the Qānūn fī l-Ṭibb (Canon of Medicine). III) An evaluation, through the use of Avicenna's manuscripts available in the IMT databases, of the philological accuracy of the various passages of the Šifāʾ that will be taken into consideration. IV) A mapping, through digital humanities techniques and with the assistance of specialised technical staff, of the number and frequency of the various types of citations used by Avicenna in the different parts of the Šifāʾ and in the other works taken into consideration, associating similar references and linking Avicenna's references to other authors and works with the corresponding passages that Avicenna may have had in mind.
