Inference of generalized entropies for complex systems

1 Research Collaborator position
(Deadline January 18th, 2023 13:00 )
Fields

Statistical Physics, Statistical Inference, Complex Systems, Econophysics

Profile

IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca is looking for a junior researcher interested in carrying out research at the intersection between Statistical Physics, Statistical Inference, Complex Systems, Network Theory and Econophysics. The candidate should have a solid quantitative background, ideally a MSc degree in (statistical) physics, (applied) mathematics, or similar. Preference will be given to candidates with research experience in the theory of generalized (non-Shannon) entropies and their use in statistical inference and model selection for the analysis of complex systems. The candidate should have a strong interest for interdisciplinary research, excellent theoretical/analytical skills, and versatility in data analysis and numerical calculations. Very good command of spoken and written English is required.

Activity

The successful candidate will carry out research within the NETWORKS Unit, whose main focus is the study of the structure, dynamics and physics of networks emerging from the intricate interconnectedness of the constituents of large complex systems. The NETWORKS Unit combines a theoretical approach with a data-driven approach informed by the empirical properties of real-world complex networks, especially those naturally emerging in financial, economic, social, ecological, neural and biological systems. The successful candidate's activity is expected to fully integrate within the NETWORKS Unit's research landscape and foster the further expansion of the latter. In particular, with this position the Unit wants to strengthen its activity in the statistical physics of generalized entropies, the theory of complex systems, econophysics and related inference problems for the modelling of real-world systems. The research will take place at the interface between statistical physics, information theory, discrete mathematics and complexity science. Given the strong interdisciplinarity of the research, a regular collaboration with national and international experts in various fields, especially mathematics, physics, computer science, neuroscience, biology, ecology, social science, economics and finance is expected. Collaboration with other research units at the IMT School is also welcome.

Formal requirements

  • Master's degree, or five-year degree or equivalent qualification in physics, mathematics or in related areas;
  • Very good command of spoken and written English.
