How many people that we talk to online do not exist? Recent research has shown that more than 40% of internet traffic may come from bots, and so-called “bad bots” are commonly used to spread disinformation, sow discord and division, and scam people out of money. Underneath all this is a thriving online manipulation market, where a handful of euros buys you tens of thousands of fake views, thousands of likes, and hundreds of comments. In this talk, Jon Roozenbeek discusses how this market works, its potential impacts on our democracy, and what we can do to stop the “bad bot” apocalypse.
