Brief CV (updated to April 2009)
Christian Cipriani is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the Advanced Robotics and Technologies Laboratory (ARTS) of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa. He was born in Lucca, Italy, on October 22, 1980. He received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering (MSc) with full marks from the University of Pisa, Italy in 2004 and the Ph.D. in Biorobotics Science and Engineering from a joint program between IMT Institute for Advanced Studies, Lucca and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa in 2008. During 2008 he was a visiting student at Lund University, Lund, Sweden.
He has been working at ARTS Lab since 2005 in the framework of several national and international research projects. He has collaborated in the IST FET CYBERHAND Project, the Revolutionizing Prosthetic Program 2007, the IST ROBOTCUB Project, the IST FET NEUROBOTICS, and the PRIN 2006 SAFFEHAND project, and he is currently involved in the NMP-CT SMARTHAND Project where he is the ARTS team manager / principal investigator.
His research interests are focused on mechatronic aspects and
control issues of advanced robotic hands to be used as
neuro-controlled prosthesis. In particular: the design of hand
controllers architectures and strategies based on proprioceptive
and exteroceptive sensors; the development and experimentation of
non-invasive control interfaces; the development and comparison of
shared-control strategies between user and the machine for
prosthetic control. Most of his activities are strongly related to
hardware development with the goal of building reliable, robust and
durable stand-alone mechatronic hands. He is the author of 15
papers on scientific journals, international peer reviewed
conferences and book chapters, and he is partner of a spin-off
company of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. With the developed
SmartHand transradial-prosthesis prototype he won in 2009 the
Antonio d’Auria prize (open to European citizens) for projects and
prototypes of innovative robotic devices to aid the motor disabled
from the Italian Robotics and Automation Association (SIRI).
Dr. Cipriani is a member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation
Society and of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology.
