Today's digital landscape has fundamentally transformed how information is disseminated, consumed, and trusted, reshaping how the public perceives and discusses major societal issues. Social media platforms now play a central role in shaping discourse, but can also amplify societal challenges such as misinformation and polarization. Despite considerable progress, significant methodological challenges remain, particularly concerning the definition and measurement of misinformation and the inherent difficulties in linking online interactions to offline outcomes. Drawing from empirical analyses of social media data, this talk addresses these complexities, emphasizing the critical importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to navigate, understand, and respond effectively to the evolving societal implications of the digital information ecosystem.
