San Francesco Complex - classroom 1

Fascination with the infinite seems hardwired in human consciousness, finding expression in art and literature, science and religion. But not all infinities are the same. This lecture will explore several varieties of infinity as they are realized in the visual arts, from William Blake’s “Minute Particulars” to J. M. W. Turner’s sublime landscapes to Antony Gormley’s Infinite Cube, now on display at the Smart Museum. The lecture will include the story of this work’s origin in the visionary geometry of the late artist Gabriel Mitchell, and Antony Gormley’s rendering of his model of the Infinite Cube. It will conclude with the screening of a 7-minute video of the Cube with dance, flute, and vocal music.
