MT School for Advanced Studies Lucca invites expressions of interest for an Assistant Professor position (“Type-A Ricercatore”) to carry out research in the areas of systems, control, and optimization. Research experience is expected in one of the following areas: control systems, numerical optimization, systems identification, machine learning. Research experience in model predictive control or convex optimization will be considered as a plus. 


Candidates must have an excellent record of high-impact international publications and demonstrate enthusiasm for performing research. Activities include: research, tutorship and mentoring of PhD students, graduate teaching. The successful candidate will be part of the research unit  Dynamical Systems, Control and Optimization at IMT Lucca.

The position is for 3 years, extendable for further 2 years.

IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca invites expressions of interest for positions in Cyber security at different levels of seniority, from early career onward. Candidates should have experience or willingness to work in the area of cyber security broadly construed, ideally complementing IMT's current strengths. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • access control;

  • distributed ledgers;

  • formal verification of security protocols;

  • network security;

  • security requirements elicitation;

  • web security.

Since multidisciplinary research is a founding value of the School, inclination to work at the intersection with other core disciplines of IMT relevant to cybersecurity will be considered an asset. We seek to hire fixed-term (i.e., non tenure-track) and tenure-track assistant professors and tenured associate professors.

The purpose of the scouting procedure is to collect expressions of interest in sectors deemed strategic for the development of the School’s research areas. Please note that expressions of interest from exceptional candidates of all ranks in areas beyond those listed below, yet still aligned with the mission of the IMT School, are also welcome.

The IMT School is collecting expression of interest in the following areas:

  • Economics, management e data science
    Applications are encouraged from candidates with experience in economics, statistics and management science, with distinctive capabilities in analyzing complex problems in economics and management. Distinctive competences of interest are in economics, political economy, econometrics, management science and analytics, applied mathematics, statistics, network theory. Specific fields of study are economics and finance; international economics; economic networks; systemic risk analysis; political economy; industrial organization, entrepreneurship and technology; marketing science; systems modelling and optimization; stochastic systems.

  • Computer Science and Systems Engineering
    Candidates with experience in (i) concurrency theory, programming languages, and software engineering, for the development of languages and techniques for the analysis and verification of modern concurrent and distributed systems, and their applications to adaptive systems, cyber-physical systems, cloud computing, computational biology, fault-tolerant systems, security, and transportation networks; (ii) System identification, control of dynamical systems, optimization, machine learning, numerical analysis; (iii) development of innovative computational methods to study advanced problems of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and cutting-edge problems involving multiple fields and length scales of high interest in both the academic and industrial sectors.

  • Neurosciences
    Candidates with a strong background in cognitive, computational and social neurosciences are invited to apply. Main areas of interest focus on cognitive psychology, behavioral, social and forensic neuroscience, A multi-disciplinary laboratory integrates advanced structural and functional neuroimaging and molecular biology and genetics methodologies with experimental and clinical psychology paradigms.
    The ideal candidate possesses experience in one or more of the following research topics: multisensory perception, supramodal conceptual representation; neuroplasticity and learning; semantic processing and neurolinguistics; social and antisocial behavior; decision-making processes in economics and financial environments.

  • Cultural Heritage
    Candidates with experience in history of ancient art and archaeology and art history; analysis, management, legislation of cultural heritage and cultural practices; aesthetics; disciplines related to the perception and uses of images and spaces.

La Scuola IMT raccoglie manifestazioni di interesse per la definizione di profili nelle aree di:

  • Economics, management e data science
    Candidati con esperienza in economia, statistica o management, con particolare riferimento all’analisi di sistemi complessi. Specifiche competenze sono richieste in economia, politica economica, management, matematica applicata, statistica, econometria e teoria delle reti. Specifiche conoscenze sono ricercate in economia, finanza, organizzazione aziendale, economia industriale e internazionale, modellizzazione e ottimizzazione di sistemi complessi.

  • Computer Science and Systems Engineering
    Candidati con esperienza in (i) teoria della concorrenza, linguaggi di programmazione e ingegneria del software, per lo sviluppo di linguaggi e metodi di analisi e verifica per sistemi moderni distribuiti e concorrenti, e le loro applicazioni a sistemi adattativi, sistemi cyber-fisici, cloud, biologia computazionale, sistemi tolleranti ai guasti, sicurezza, e reti di trasporti;
    (ii) Identificazione di sistemi dinamici, sistemi di controllo, ottimizzazione, machine learning, analisi numerica. (iii) sviluppo di metodi computazionali innovativi per lo studio di problemi avanzati di meccanica dei solidi, meccanica dei fluidi e ulteriori questioni di elevato interesse sia per il mondo accademico che industriale.

  • Neurosciences
    Candidati con comprovata esperienza in neuroscienze cognitive, computazionali e sociali. Le principali aree di interesse si concentrano su psicologia cognitiva, neuroscienze comportamentali, sociali e forensi. Un laboratorio multidisciplinare integra neuroimaging strutturale e funzionale avanzato e biologia molecolare e metodologie genetiche con paradigmi psicologici sperimentali e clinici.
    Il candidato ideale possiede esperienza in una o più delle seguenti tematiche di ricerca: percezione multisensoriale, rappresentazione concettuale sopramodale; plasticità neurologica e apprendimento; elaborazione semantica e neurolinguistica; comportamenti sociali e anti-sociali; processi decisionali nello sviluppo economico e finanziario.

  • Cultural Heritage
    Candidati con curriculum in storia dell'arte antica e archeologia, storia dell'arte; management, legislazione del patrimonio e delle pratiche culturali; estetica e discipline relative alla percezione e l'uso delle immagini e degli spazi.

  • Psychology

    Macrosettore 11/E1 Psicologia Generale, Psicobiologia e Psicometria or related field.
    The candidate must have a strong experience in the study of human brain functions, with specific reference to the study of the neural bases of cognitive function and brain organization and metabolism, including perception, action and conceptual representation. The candidate and must have a continuative publication record with high quality publications in the field. The candidate must possess a solid didactic experience at University level in the disciplines pertinent to the profile. Ideally, the candidate has had roles in University governance, in national and international scientific organizations and in managing research funds and projects.

    Macrosettore 11/E1 Psicologia Generale, Psicobiologia e Psicometria o ambiti attinenti.
    Il candidato dovrà possedere una comprovata esperienza nello studio delle funzioni e organizzazione del cervello umano, con particolare riferimento  allo studio delle basi neurali e ai correlati metabolici delle funzioni cognitive, incluse percezione, azione e rappresentazione concettuale. Il candidato dovrà possedere un curriculum scientifico caratterizzato da una continuità di produzione con pubblicazioni di elevata qualità nei campi di interesse della call. Il candidato dovrà dimostrare di possedere una consolidata esperienza didattica a livello universitario nelle discipline pertinenti il profilo. Saranno valutate altresì cariche in organi universitari, in organizzazioni scientifiche nazionali ed internazionali e nella gestione di  fondi e progetti di ricerca.

The purpose of the scouting procedure is to collect expressions of interest in sectors deemed strategic for the development of the Institute's research areas. Please note that expressions of interest from exceptional candidates of all ranks in areas beyond those listed below, yet still aligned with the mission of IMT, are also welcome. IMT is currently recruiting:

  • Computer Science and Engineering, Statistics, Mathematical and Network Sciences
    candidates with scientific expertise in: (i) statistics, computer science, applied mathematics, or engineering, with a distinctive quantitative approach and with interest in at least one of the areas of systems modeling and analysis, data mining, machine learning, computational statistics, numerical analysis, and in their application to cyber-physical or socio-economical systems; (ii) computer engineering/computer science with interest in computing infrastructures, performance evaluation, parallel and distributed computing, and real-time systems; (iii) complex networks and graph theory, and their application to the analysis of the properties and of the dynamics of large-scale social, economic, financial, biological, and technological networks; (iv) mathematics, probability theory, stochastic processes, and their application to management science, economics, and financial analysis.
  • Cultural Heritage
    candidates with one of the following backgrounds: (i) classics and archaeology, with particular emphasis on the interdisciplinary approach to visual phenomena in the ancient world, on the interactions between the social, cultural and religious contexts and the visual phenomena, and on the history of classical tradition in the western culture; (ii) art history and related fields, with particular emphasis on the history of the reception of images, the interdisciplinary approach to the visual phenomena, history of art criticism and aesthetics, cultural heritage protection and organization seen from a historical perspective, history of collecting, contemporary debates about the protection, management and valorization of cultural heritage, current practices in museology; (iii) law, with particular emphasis on the juridical status of cultural heritage in a comparative perspective.
  • Economics and Management Science
    candidates with a background in (i) economics/political economy with particular reference to the determinants and evolution of political institutions, policies and culture, as well as economic development, macroeconomic analysis and policy; (ii)management science and applied economics with particular emphasis on the analysis of large economic and enterprise management data structures; inter-firm collaboration networks; analysis of dynamics of growth and decline in firms networks.

On the basis of the results of the first and second phase of the first Scouting procedure (1st edition), the current faculty and the research needs, on July 13th, 2011 IMT has opened a new edition for the collection of expressions of interest.

We will consider highly qualified candidates working at the intersection between computer science, physics, information theory, and mathematics, who combine a strong theoretical background with an orientation towards research on processing huge amounts of complex data in the analysis of socio economic, technical, or biological. Candidates must have an excellent record of high-impact international publications. They should have demonstrated remarkable ability in leading research groups, as well as experience in conducting/coordinating international projects.
Preference will be given to candidates active at the intersection between algorithms, theory and applications, in the following fields: analysis and modeling of massive data structures; graph theory and random structures; analysis and modeling of complex networks; machine learning, large scale data mining.

Results
The Research Selection Committee examined the high number of expressions of interest and remarked on the elevated quality of the candidates, however advised continuing the International Scouting process and not to open the procedure for transfer calls or direct appointments at this time due to the lack of congruency between the specific research interests of the candidates and the intended scientific trajectory of the Institute.

Details: We will consider highly qualified candidates in statistical physics and those working at the intersection between statistical physics, discrete mathematics, and computer science. They should have demonstrated remarkable ability in leading research groups, as well as experience in conducting/coordinating international projects.   • Candidates with a well-established and recognized record of international publications in the area of political history, with particular reference to comparative history of European political institutions and processes of institutional change in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Results
The analysis of the expressions of interest was divided in two phases.
The results of the first phase lead to the following decisions:

  • The appointment of Prof. Alberto Bemporad, Full Professor in the area of Computer Science and Applications SSD ING-INF/04. Prof Bemporad operates in the filed of Embedded Systems (autonomous and intelligent control of complex physical systems), his appointment started on July 1st, 2011.
  • the decision to open a transfer call for a Tenured Assistant Professor (ricercatore confermato) in the specific scientific area of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (SSD MAT/06 MATEMATICA). Dott.ssa. Irene Crimaldi has been selected. (Decree).

The results of the second phase include:

  • the appointment of Prof. Davide Ticchi, Full Professor in the area of Economic and Institutional Change, SSD SECS-P/01. Prof Ticchi operates in the fileds of Political Economy. His appointment started on September 1st, 2011.
  • the appointment of Prof. Maria Luisa Catoni, Associate Professor in the area of Economic and Institutional Change, SSD L-ANT/07. Prof Catoni operates in the fileds of Classic Archeology. Her appointment started on November 1st, 2011. (Decree)
