How to reach the Library

IMT Library – Piazza San Ponziano – 55100 LUCCA – Italy

The building

IMT Library is located in what was formerly Church of San Ponziano.

The church, previously dedicated to San Bartolomeo in Silice, was founded in the IX century by Benedictine monks and passed on to Olivetan monks in XIV. In 1474, the Church housed the relics of San Ponziano.

It was restored between XVI and XVII century loosing its Medieval appearance, but it is still possible to admire on the inside the original apse of IX century and a chapel with a fresco depicting San Martino of XII century.

The fresco that still decorates the apse vault, La Gloria del Beato Bernardo Tolomei (1740-1760), is a work of Gian Domenico Ferretti.
