Nobel Prize winner Aghion speaks at IMT on AI
"Should we fear AI?" This was the provocative title of the seminar given by Philippe Aghion, winner of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics and professor at the Collège de France and the London School of Economics, held at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca.
The lecture was opened by Marco Paggi, Vice-Rector and Professor of Structural Mechanics at the IMT School, and Massimo Riccaboni, Director of the multidisciplinary scientific area of Economics, Management and Statistics at the IMT School.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that artificial intelligence has enormous growth potential, if its development and application are guided by appropriate policies.
Even the negative impacts on employment can be limited through targeted interventions in education and the labour market, so that the application of AI generates new jobs.
The importance of avoiding indiscriminate and uncontrolled use of AI in training processes was also emphasised in order to limit its potential negative effects.
