EUI-IMT: Workshop on Trade Firms Dynamics and Growth
Classroom 6, Via San Micheletto 3, Lucca

About EUI-IMT Workshop

The availability of rich firm-level data has recently led to a series of new empirical findings on the effects of trade liberalization on innovation and productivity. A first wave of research has focused on the selection effect of trade on firm productivity.
Theoretical and empirical analysis have shown that trade liberalization forces the least productive firms to exit the market and reallocates resources to more productive, surviving, firms.
This reallocation of resources leads to an increase in the aggregate productivity ‘level’ of the economy. A second line of research is currently trying to understand whether trade-induced firm selection has a positive effect on innovation and on the ‘growth’ rate of productivity.
The scope of this workshop is to put together a set of papers that could provide an overview of the state of the art on this new vibrant research agenda.
