Ph.D. Program in Political Systems and Institutional Change / PSIC
Ph.D. Thesis and Supervisors/Tutors:
At the end of the doctoral program, Ph.D. candidates must submit a thesis dissertation, consisting of a suitable body of original academic research. The final exam takes place in front of the Evaluation Committee, and consists of a public defense of the thesis. Having passed the final exam, students obtain the Ph.D. degree.
Following the granting of the degree, IMT sends a copy of each Ph.D. thesis to the National Libraries of Rome and Florence. Each thesis will also be disseminated on the IMT web site through an open access archive.
The Scientific Board promotes the dissemination of the results of each thesis, organizing, a public seminar where each Ph.D. graduate illustrates his or her research results to an audience of qualified peers and professionals active in the relevant field.
In addition to the Coordinator and the Scientific Board, each Ph.D. student at IMT is supported by a tutor and a supervisor.
The tutors orientate Ph.D. students throughout the first period of the doctoral program, consisting mainly of taught courses and seminars. Tutors are selected from the body of professors and researchers based at the institute, or, in exceptional circumstances, other scholars as may be appropriate.
The supervisors orientate students in the realization of their research projects and editing of the thesis. Supervisors are members of the international academic community, being resident or visiting professors at IMT, members of the Ph.D. Program Scientific Board or professors who have been appointed as lecturers within the Ph.D. program. Supervisors are generally appointed after the first year of the Ph.D. program.
