Mission and objectives

The track trains researchers, professionals and experts in political economy, applied public economics, industrial economics, with a focus on comparative institutional analysis, on big data and the empirical analysis of real and financial markets, and on macroeconomic policy. With its theoretical, quantitative and institutional approach, the program meets the increasing demand for highly qualified professionals, able to analyze, plan, and manage concrete applications of political economy.

Methodologies

With its interdisciplinary approach, the program deals with issues in political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of industries and markets, and the impact of macroeconomic factors on the functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth. The distinctive character of the track is its strong integration of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, to educate highly qualified professionals who analyze, plan, and manage concrete applications of political economy. Theoretical methodologies and models are tested through the systematic investigation of real-world case studies. At the end of the program, students will be able to discern the commonalities as well as distinctive features of markets and industries, with regards to economic laws, market regulations, and contractual, management and organizational solutions.

Research

The track in Economics provides participants with a solid knowledge base in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, as well as in some more specific fields, such as political economy and the analysis of complex systems. Students and faculty address a wide range of research questions in the areas of macroeconomics, political economy, economics of innovation, and industrial economics. The track is designed to prepare candidates for leading positions in the academy and international organizations, as well as in research and consulting centers.
ECON students have the opportunity to perform advanced research within the following research units of IMT, in accordance with their study: Thanks to the wide international research networks of the research units, the PhD candidates also have the opportunity to collaborate with many other institutions on a variety of joint endeavors.

Input and Output Profiles

Prospective students can apply for this track regardless of their academic discipline. However, the track provides participants with a solid knowledge base in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, as well as in some more specific fields, such as political economy and the analysis of complex systems. Students and faculty address a wide range of research questions in the areas of macroeconomics, political economy, economics of innovation, and industrial economics. Accordingly, the main job opportunities for graduates from this track are at national and international, public and private agencies and institutions which analyze political economics, public finance, market analysis and evaluate the impact of reforms on the economic system; consultancy societies, sectorial or national authorities, big enterprises, national governmental institutions (ministries and local authorities); and EC institutions; national and international universities.
