Activity
Research in the context of the CrisisLab project, with particular regard to Complex Networks of Economic and financial data. The candidate will design and realize a Web Services platform for economic and social data retrieval, analysis, visualization and management of the collected data. Research, tutorship and mentoring of the Institute's Ph.D. students, limited teaching and participation in the development of the Institute's research activities.
Formal requirements
A Phd in a related field with publications. The candidates should have an adequate scientific curriculum for carrying out research activities. An excellent level of both written and spoken English is mandatory.

Specific requirements
Professional experiences in the following areas is a preferential requirement: physics, mathematics and computer. The candidates should have a wide set of publications in complex networks of economic and financial data, social networks and general algorithms.
Candidates should have a Background and publications in: data mining, machine learning (classification, clustering, learning to rank, collaborative filtering, regression analysis, etc.), graph mining (community detection, link prediction etc.), complex networks, stochastic modeling, information retrieval, social and information networks, big data and scalable computing.
CS fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, software engineering, databases, etc.
Strong programming skills (at least one is required, few is a plus): Java, C++, Python
BigData tools: MapReduce, Hadoop, Mahout, NoSQL, etc.
Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm for performing applied research in an interdisciplinary Research Unit.

Selection procedure and criteria

Selection procedure conditions are transparent and are based on international standards.

Procedure

A Selection Committee, appointed by the Director, assesses all applications on the basis online application info and - if provided - reference letters. Shortlisted candidates, selected on the basis of the preliminary analysis, are invited for a research presentation at IMT. Travel expenses to Lucca for the research presentation interview will not be reimbursed.

Selection Criteria

The evaluation criteria are based on: Quality of research activity, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and references; Research organization experience and participation in international/national research projects and research periods in public and private institutions (academic and non-academic); Relevance of the candidate's profile for the development of IMT's research activities; Teaching, mentoring and supervision experience; Motivation; Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken; As well as any other requirements as specified in the advertisement.
