Multiscale fracture modeling in heterogeneous materials: recent challenges

We present our recent works on multiscale modelling of fracture in heterogeneous materials, and more specifically related to the following challenges: (i) how to reduce prohibitive calculations in nonlinear multiscale simulations involving fracture at the micro scale; (ii) how to design materials with enhanced fracture resistance and (iii) how to construct homogenized damage models from Representative Volume Element (RVE) fracture simulations. We present contributions to address these challenges, including the development of a novel nonlinear multiscale method based on k-means clustering, the combination of fracture simulations and topology optimization, and the development of a data-driven technique using micro fracture simulations and computational homogenization to construct general anisotropic damage models, given a microstructural model. Applications to civil engineering, 3D-printed bi-materials, and image-based models of micro structures are presented.
