Articulating in Words and Images - Talk 1

20 novembre 2017
San Francesco - Via della Quarquonia 1 (Classroom 1 )
Words and Images are the two fundamental means of symbolic articulation. If (or to what extent) they simply represent or actually engender the world has been vigorously debated in ever changing contexts. In the first part of the seminar, I will present some crucial historical positions along the lines of central dichotomies in philosophy of language such as natural-arbitrary, cognitive-communicative, embodiment-thought, universal-particular. The second part shall be dedicated to the question of thinking and experiencing in words or images. On the basis of two short texts that will be distributed beforehand, we will further discuss the notion of man as homo pictor in an anthropological framework.
