Recruitment Procedure

The recruitment procedure was designed according to IMT Policy for the Recruitment of Tenured Faculty (download in PDF: in English and Italian), which regulates the two-phase procedure of recruitment.
  1. First stage: job market analysis, based on broad profiles, carried out by Evaluation Committees on the basis of expressions of interest. During this phase:
    • broad profiles are published in order to detect the potential for recruitment in a subset of narrower profiles and to get information about its "location" (e.g. within the Italian University system, abroad, etc.). This analysis allows IMT to get a clear vision/view of the available professionalities and of the "location" of the highest potential to be recruited;
    • IMT Director presents the outcomes of the job market analysis to the Advisory Boards, which support him to draft a Recruitment Plan.
  2. Second stage: Recruitment Plan deliberation by the Executive Council.

    The recruitment plan contains:
    1. the specific positions (full or associate) and profiles to be hired;
    2. the procedure to be followed for each profile/position according to national procedures, i.e.
    From Italian Universities
    • Bando per trasferimento, "transfer call", or bando per chiamata di idoneo, "call for appointment of winner of Italian professorship public competition", reserved to professors already affiliated in Italy in the same position or, alternatively to winners of national public competitions who have not been hired yet.
    From Foreign Universities or non Academic Research Institutes
    • Chiamata diretta or chiamata di chiara fama "direct appointment" − mainly for candidates affiliated to foreign universities or national and foreign non academic research institutes, who can be appointed without public competition.
Appointment starting date will be defined individually, according to the recruitment procedure adopted for each position.

All phases of the Recruitment procedure are widely advertised and are carried out on the basis of the following selection criteria:
  • scientific and academic record, relevance of research activity, CV, scientific publications, reference letters;
  • the capacity to secure and manage external research funds;
  • Proficiency in English both written and spoken.

On Going Recruitment

In the second half of 2008, IMT started the first stage of the recruitment procedure publishing the profiles to collect relevant expressions of interest to carry out the job market analysis in the fields of Computer Science and Engineering, Economics and Political Sciences at an international level, on the basis of 3 profiles in terms of relevant scientific macro-fields according to the School identity and its guidelines.

Current phase

IMT Director, Prof. Fabio Pammolli, has presented the results of this preliminary phase to the Executive Council.
On July 17, 2009, the Executive Council has decided to start the recruitment from Fall 2009 on.
  • Bando per trasferimento "transfer call" or bando per chiamata di idoneo
The calls will be published from Fall 2009 on. This procedure will typically take 2-3 months (call opening + specific selection). As soon as the calls open, the School will widely advertise them.
  • Chiamata diretta or chiamata di chiara fama ("direct appointment")
Before the recruitment procedures will be launched, the School may contact directly the most promising candidates. The direct appointments typically requires several months since they have to be approved by the Ministry of University and CUN (National University Board).
