The IMT Executive Council has deliberated a Direct Call for an Associate Professor in Fisica della Materia (SSD FIS/03).
The Direct Call of Prof. Guido Caldarelli, has been approved by the Ministry of Universities and CUN (National University Board).
Prof. Caldarelli's appointment started on February 1st, 2013.

International Scouting 2012, 2nd edition (deadline December 31st, 2012)

On December 31st 2012 the 2nd Edition of International Scouting 2012 for Tenured Positions in the fields of management science and quantitative finance, risk analysis, numerical analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining of natural, technical and socio economic systems closed (see here for the full profile). The selection committee has finished evaluating the many expressions of interest received, and has invited one candidate to continue in the evaluation procedure. Prof. Marco Paggi will be giving a public seminar on March 5th at IMT Lucca. For more details, please see here.

On the basis of the results of the second scouting procedure, IMT has opened a new international scouting procedure for Tenured Positions.
The purpose of the scouting procedure is to collect expressions of interest in sectors deemed strategic for the development of the Research Areas.

We will consider highly qualified candidates with a strong theoretical background in computer science, physics, statistics, information science, engineering, or mathematics, with an orientation towards research on processing huge amounts of complex data in the analysis of technical, socio economic or biological systems. Candidates must have an excellent record of high-impact international publications. They should have demonstrated remarkable ability in leading research groups, as well as experience in conducting/coordinating international projects.
Preference will be given to candidates performing research at the intersection between algorithms, theory and applications, and who are active in one or more of the following fields: analysis and modeling of massive data structures; graph theory and random structures; analysis and modeling of complex networks; machine learning; data mining; parallel and distributed computation.

The successful candidate will operate in the field of Management Science with proven ability to analyze large data structures in the areas of economics and innovation management, the analysis of collaborative networks between enterprises and the analysis of the grown and decline of companies.
Requirements
In order to be eligible to participate, the candidate must have, alternatively
  • Candidates that have been awarded eligibility ("idoneità") for the category of the position advertised;
  • Professors currently appointed to similar positions by other national Universities;
  • International scholars currently undertaking regular research and teaching activity at a University level in a position similar to that advertised.

Details: We will consider highly qualified candidates in statistical physics and those working at the intersection between statistical physics, discrete mathematics, and computer science. Details: We will consider candidates in computer science and those working at the intersection between computer science, discrete mathematics, information theory, computer engineering, with an excellent record of high-impact international publications. Preference will be given to candidates active in one or more of the following fields: languages, methods, tools and algorithms for the analysis and modeling of dynamical and structural properties of IT systems, with emphasis on one or more of the following themes: Embedded Systems (autonomous and intelligent control of complex physical systems); Service Oriented Architectures (services for interactions over wide area networks); Computer Networks (dynamical and structural properties, performance evaluation); Computational Structures (development of high performance, reliable, and secure computing systems); Computational Networks (for social and artificial systems); Decentralized Information Environments (languages and technologies to integrate data and models across global networks); and Information Systems (text/data/concept mining and their analysis). Details: We will consider candidates in political science and in political history. Preference will be given to:

  • Candidates with a well-established and recognized record of international publications in the area of political history, with particular reference to comparative history of European political institutions and processes of institutional change in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Results
The analysis of the expressions of interest was divided in two phases.
The results of the first phase lead to the following decisions:

  • the appointment of Prof. Alberto Bemporad, Full Professor in the area of Computer Science and Applications SSD ING-INF/04. Prof Bemporad operates in the filed of Embedded Systems (autonomous and intelligent control of complex physical systems), his appointment started on July 1, 2011.
  • the decision to open a transfer call for a Tenured Assistant Professor (ricercatore confermato) in the specific scientific area of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (SSD MAT/06 MATEMATICA). Dott.ssa. Irene Crimaldi has been selected. (Decree).

The results of the second phase include:
  • the appointment of Prof. Davide Ticchi, Full Professor in the area of Economic and Institutional Change, SSD SECS-P/01. Prof Ticchi operates in the fileds of Political Economy. His appointment started on September 1, 2011.
  • the appointment of Prof. Maria Luisa Catoni, Associate Professor in the area of Economic and Institutional Change, SSD L-ANT /07. Prof Catoni operates in the fileds of Classic Archeology. Her appointment started on November 1, 2011. Decree

The Research Selection Committee examined the high number of expressions of interest and remarked on the elevated quality of the candidates, however advised continuing the International Scouting process and not to open the procedure for transfer calls or direct appointments at this time due to the lack of congruency between the specific research interests of the candidates and the intended scientific trajectory of the Institute.

Profile
The candidate must have already produced a research portfolio including publications in international peer-reviewed journals treating themes related to probability theory and stochastic processes. In addition, the candidate should have interests in the application of stochastic theory, in particular in those based on the convergence of conditional expected values. The candidate should also have familiarity with asymptotical aspects in urn models, also in the context of management science and economic and financial analysis. The successful candidate will work within the Economics and Institutional Change research area.

In order to be eligible to participate, the candidate must have held the same academic appointment (Permament Researcher in the Area MAT 06) at an Italian University for at least three years by the date of the application submittal.

Profile
Candidates should be actively involved in the fields of foundations and process description languages for distributed systems, and in particular regarding software systems for global computing, with applications to service oriented computing. Preference will be given to candidates with an excellent record of well-recognized publications. They should also have demonstrated exceptional abilities in building and leading research groups both on the cutting edge of international research and be able to develop advanced, experimental software tools for execution and verification.

Details of the evaluation procedure

The successful participant must currently hold an appointment as Full Professor within the Italian university system and be scientifically recognized by the international academic community. Participants should be active in the fields of analysis and management of complex systems in a technological or engineering discipline, in accordance with the strategic planning goals of the Institute. The participant must also have an excellent understanding of research systems and in Italy and abroad.

In their expressions of interest, participants must include a cover letter, indicating within the name of 3 referees, a detailed CV and a statement of up to 30,000 characters (spaces included) highlighting the most fundamental characteristics of their appointment as Director, in concert with the IMT mission statement and development plan regarding research, teaching, local relationships and administrative management.
