Assistant Professor and Post-doctoral Fellow recruitment program

Calls closed on November 20, 2009 at midnight (Italian time)

Recruitment Program Principles And Standards

IMT is a dynamic centre for young researchers. A combination of private and public funds enables the School to compete on an international level to attract top junior faculty. IMT Research Fellows are resident researchers pursuing advanced studies based in a Research Area. IMT competitions for Research Fellows offer positions for both Assistant Professors and Post-Doctoral Fellows and involve evaluation by current junior and senior researchers.

Assistant Professors and Post-Doctoral Fellows are usually appointed for a fixed term from one year up to three years. All contracts may be renewed once, for up to six years. Assistant Professors differ from Post-doctoral Fellows on the basis of experience, scientific curriculum and compensation. The remuneration package is competitive at the international level and includes generous research funds. Additional benefits may be negotiated with selected applicants.

IMT Assistant Professors and Post-Doctoral Fellows work closely with other young researchers, graduate students and senior researchers, and have a limited teaching load in the School graduate programs. Evaluation procedures are based on rigorous peer-review criteria. IMT believes that faculty and staff diversity contributes to excellence and is an equal-opportunity employer.

Recruitment is organized by job market. The Program is usually launched once a year in Fall (deadline: November − December, selection: January − April of the following year)

IMT follows state of the art criteria for all its procedures in compliance with the European Commission recommendations proposed in the European Charter for Researchers and in the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. In particular, IMT ensures that researchers will not be discriminated on the basis of gender, age, ethnic, national or social origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, language, disability, political opinion, or social and/or economic conditions. Broad dissemination of information about the openings guarantees that any candidate in any part of the world can compete for the position offered.

Candidates may apply by simply filling out an online application form, available on IMT website, and uploading relevant additional documents, such as the CV and relevant publications in PDF format. In addition, IMT requires reference letters for each candidate.

Selection procedures are transparent and are based on peer review criteria and with the capacity to thoroughly negotiate positions by relying on international standards and salary levels. IMT is committed to provide adequate resources to support research activity of its faculty as well as the full flexibility of working conditions.

Selection procedures are unique for both positions: the position to be offered to successful candidates as the exact amount of the remuneration is decided at the end of the process.

Both junior and senior researchers are regarded as IMT most important investments. All are required to perform certain teaching activities within the PhD programs. IMT supports the statement that "...current researchers should build up a constructive and positive relationship with early-stage researchers, in order to create the conditions for the efficient transfer of knowledge and for the further successful development of the early-stage researchers' careers" (European Charter for Researchers, Ref. Supervision and managerial duties).

Furthermore, IMT recognizes "the value of geographical, intersectional, inter- and trans-disciplinary and virtual mobility…as an important means of enhancing scientific knowledge and professional development at any stage of a researcher's career" (European Charter for Researchers, Ref. Value of mobility). Therefore, it acknowledges any past mobility experience and encourages mobility at all levels and supports research and projects in interdisciplinary topics and collaborations at the international level.

IMT has also signed the "Commitment of Quality Assurance" (PDF, 25 KB) for the ERACAREERS Researcher's mobility portal, a non-legally binding document according to which signatories commit themselves to provide updated and reliable information to be made available on the website, in order to testify its involvement and its positive reception of the quality guidelines and principles as defined in the commitment for Quality Assurance itself and in the European Charter for Researchers and in the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

IMT has been accredited by ISSNAF The Italian Scientists and Scholars of North America Foundation - a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting R&D interaction among those Italians active in North-American and Italian Academic and non-Academic Institutions, in the fields of Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Information technology, Mathematics Physics and Chemistry, Medicine and Biology, Earth and Environmental sciences, Economics and Social sciences.
