In the fall of 2010 IMT launched a new international call for applications for Assistant Professor positions in the fields of Economics, Management Science, Analysis of Complex Systems and Operations, Complex Data and Image Analysis, Computer Science Applications to Cultural Heritage Sites, Global Computing, Networking Systems and Industrial Energy Efficiency.

Applications received were 521* in total, divided as follow:
  • Economics: 232
  • Management Science, Analysis of Complex Systems and Operations: 45
  • Complex Data and Image Analysis: 60 (over two separate rounds as in the first round no appointments were made)
  • Computer Science Applications to Cultural Heritage Sites: 47
  • Global Computing: 47
  • Networking Systems: 64
  • Industrial Energy Efficiency: 26
*Candidates were permitted to apply for more than one position.

Twenty interviews were carried out for the selection procedure in Economics between the AEA meetings in Denver and at IMT. Four interviews were carried out for Management Science, Analysis of Complex Systems and Operations, in total twelve candidates were interviewed at IMT for the selections in Complex Data and Image Analysis, three interviews of Computer Science Applications to Cultural Heritage Sites, five interviews for Global Computing, five interviews Networking Systems Engineering and no interviews were carried out for Industrial Energy Efficiency positions.

Short−listed candidates were then invited to present their job market papers at open seminars, as required by the IMT recruitment procedure: Finally, the candidates were ranked according to their Job Market presentation, profile, experience and reference letters.

Selection Outcomes:

Out of the total of the 521 applications received
  • 142 (27%) arrived from candidates with a Ph.D. obtained in a European country other than Italy
  • 123 (24%) arrived from candidates with Ph.D. from the United States
  • 158 (30%) arrived from candidates with Ph.D. obtained in Italy
  • 43 applications arrived from Italian candidates with a Ph.D. obtained abroad.
These statistics show that IMT is consistently able to attract both scholars raised and trained abroad, as the majority of applications were received from abroad, and Italian scholars trained abroad with the desire to return to Italy to continue their academic career.

At the end of the selections 7 new Assistant Professors were hired by IMT. The new IMT researchers are:
  • 1 American citizen who obtained his Undergraduate degree Ph.D. in the field of Physics at Boston University;
  • 1 Italian citizen who obtained her undergraduate degree in Italy and her Ph.D. in the field of Economics at Northwestern University in Chicago;
  • 1 Greek citizen who obtained his Ph.D. in the fields of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University in Chicago;
  • 1 Italian citizen who obtained her Ph.D. in the field Operations Research at the University of Bari;
  • 1 Italian citizen who obtained her Ph.D. in the field of Probability at the Sapienza University in Rome;
  • 1 Italian citizen who obtained his Ph.D. in the field of Formal Methods at the University of Florence;
  • 1 Italian citizen who obtained his Ph.D. in the field of Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Florence.

In fall 2009 IMT launched a new international call for applications for Assistant Professor and Post-Doc position in the fields of Economics, Political Sciences and Computer Science and Engineering: Applications to Cultural Heritage.

Applications received were 520* in total, divided as follow:
  • Economics: 289
  • Political Sciences: 202
  • Computer Science and Engineering: Applications to Cultural Heritage: 74
*Candidates were permitted to apply for more than one position.

Thirty-one interviews were carried out for the selection in Economics at the ASSA meetings in Atlanta and at IMT. Fourteen candidates were interviewed at IMT for the selections in Political Sciences and three candidates were interviewed for the selections in Computer Science and Engineering: Applications to Cultural Heritage.

Short−listed candidates were then invited to present their job market papers at open seminars, as required by the IMT recruitment procedure: Finally, the candidates were ranked according to their Job Market presentation, profile, experience and reference letters.

Selection Outcomes:

Out of the total of the 520 applications received
  • 141 (27%) arrived from candidates with a Ph.D obtained in a European country other than Italy
  • 214 (41%) arrived from candidates with Ph.D. from the United States
  • 120 (23%) arrived from candidates with Ph.D. obtained in Italy
  • 55 applications arrived from Italian candidates with a Ph.D. obtained abroad.
The analysis of the received applications demonstrates IMT's capacity to attract qualified human capital the increase in candidates who obtained their Ph.D. in the United States (41% this year, 26% in the previous call).

Also, the numerous applications from Italian citizens who completed their Ph.D. study abroad (35% of the Italian applicants) confirm the existence of a "diaspora" problem. These applications clearly indicate the attempts of Italian researchers to return to their home country.

At the end of the selections 3 new Assistant Professors were hired by IMT. The new IMT researchers are:
  • 1 Italian citizen with a Ph.D. in Economics obtained at Bocconi University, Italy. He was also visiting student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, and is now on leave for a research period at Yale University, USA;
  • 1 Italian citizen with a Ph.D. in Contemporary History obtained at the University of Bologna, Italy, and she was research fellow at the Luiss Guido Carli di Roma, Italy;
  • 1 Uruguayan/German citizen with a Ph.D. in Social Science obtained at the Californian Institute of Technology, USA.

In fall 2008 IMT launched the fourth international call for applications for, Assistant Professors and Post-Doctoral Fellows in the fields of Economics, Political Sciences and Computer Science and Engineering.

Applications received were 556 in total, divided as follow:
  • Economics: 296
  • Political Sciences: 135
  • Computer Science and Engineering: 125
Nearly 50 interviews were carried out for the selection in Economics at the ASSA meetings in San Francisco (January 3-5, 2009), at the "Royal Economic Society PhD Presentation Meeting" held at the London School of Economics (January 16-17, 2009) and at IMT. 20 candidates were interviewed at IMT for the selections in Political Sciences and 11 candidates were interviewed at IMT for the selections in Computer Science and Engineering.

Short−listed candidates were then invited to present their job market papers at open seminars, as required by the IMT recruitment procedure:
Finally, the candidates were ranked according to their job market presentation, profile, experience and reference letters.

Selection Outcomes:

Out of the total of the 556 applications received
  • 185 (33%) arrived from candidates with a Ph.D obtained in a European country other than from Italy
  • 146 (26%) arrived from candidates with Ph.D. from the United States
  • 80 (15%) arrived from candidates with Ph.D. obtained in Italy
  • 72 applications arrived from Italian candidates with a Ph.D. obtained abroad.
Once more the analysis of the received applications demonstrates the capacity to attract qualified human capital to IMT.

The numerous applications from Italian citizens who completed their Ph.D. study abroad (49% of the Italian applicants) confirm the conclusions of the calls of the previous year, affirming a "diaspora" problem. These applications clearly indicate the attempts of Italian researchers to return in their home country.

Eight new researchers (5 Assistant Professors and 3 Post-doctoral Fellows) were hired by IMT. The new IMT researchers are:
  • 2 Italian citizens with a Ph.D. obtained abroad: one was awarded his Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Science at the University of Bristol, U.K. while the other one obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science at the Trinity College Dublin and was Post-doc at the Alexander Hamilton Centre for Political Economy at the New York University, NY;
  • 2 Americans with a Ph.D. in Political Science obtained at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at the California Institute of Technology, respectively;
  • 1 Spanish citizen with Ph.D. obtained at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg
  • 3 Italians with a Ph.D. obtained in Italy

At the end of 2007, thanks to a project financed by the Italian Ministry of International Trade and European Affairs, IMT has launched the third international call for Research Fellows in the Research Area of Economics and Institutional Change. The call concluded with the hiring of a new Assistant Professor.

The selection procedure, conducted by the Evaluation Committee, started with an initial application of 301 candidates. The individual interviews were arranged with the short-listed candidates selected on the basis of CVs, publications and reference letters. As a result, nearly 50 interviews were carried out by the Evaluation Committee members at the ASSA meetings in New Orleans (January 4-6, 2008) and at the "Royal Economic Society PhD Presentation Meeting" at the London School of Economics (January 19-20, 2008).
Short-listed candidates were then invited to present their job market papers at an open seminar on February 15, 16 and 22, 2008, (display the program of the Job Market Seminars 2008).

Finally, the candidates were ranked according to their job market presentation, profile, experience and reference letters.

Selection Outcomes:

301 applications from 157 universities
  • 111 applications (37%) from candidates with PhD obtained in a European country other than Italy
  • 98 applications (33%) from candidates with Ph.D. in the United States
  • 56 applications (19%) from candidates with Ph.D. obtained in Italy
  • 36 applications (12%) from candidates with Ph.D. obtained in the rest of the world
  • 140 applications (47%) from candidates with Ph.D. obtained in one of the top 100 economic departments in the world (P. Kalaitzidakis, T. P. Mamuneas and T. Stengos, Rankings of Academic Journals and Institutions in Economics, December 2003, European Economic Association).
  • 48 applications (16%) from Italians with a Ph.D. obtained abroad.

In November 2006, thanks to a Farmindustria unrestricted grant, IMT has issued a second international call for Research Fellows in the area of Economics, Markets, Institutions, that closed with the hiring of two new Assistant Professors.

The selection procedure, conducted by a committee of professors and researchers aged 35-50, with an international background a range of areas of specialization, started with an initial application pool of nearly 300 and continued with over 50 interviews conducted at the ASSA meetings in Chicago (5-7 January 2007) and at the "Royal Economic Society Ph.D. Presentation Meeting" at the London School of Economics (27-28 January 2007).
Short-listed candidates were then invited to present a research paper in the context of a seminar open to faculty members and students of limit (display the program of the Job Market Seminars 2007).

A short list with the final ranking of candidates was produced on the basis of profile and experience, and upon receipt of reference letters.

276 applications from 151 universities
  • 120 applications (43%) from candidates with a Ph.D. obtained in a European country other than Italy
  • 90 applications (33%) from candidates with a Ph.D. obtained in other non−European contries the United States
  • 35 applications (13%) from candidates with a Ph.D. obtained in other non−European contries Italy
  • 31 applications (11%) from candidates with a Ph.D. obtained in other non−European contries the rest of the world
Morevoer:
  • 132 applications (48%) from candidates with a Ph.D. obtained in one of the first 100 economic departments in the world (P. Kalaitzidakis, T. P. Mamuneas and T. Stengos, Rankings of Academic Journals and Institutions in Economics, December 2003, European Economic Association).
  • 45 applications (16%) from Italians with a Ph.D. obtained abroad.
The number, the quality and the origin of the applications received show the possibility of attracting highly skilled human capital to Italy.
The numerous applications from Italians who completed their Ph.D. abroad confirms the existence of a "diaspora" problem that needs to be dealt with.

At the end of the selections IMT hired two Assistant Professors: a Brazilian citizen with Ph.D. at the IIES/Stockholm University, a Taiwanese citizen, with Ph.D. from the Université de Toulouse 1 and Post-doc Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the U.S.A.

In 2005, IMT conducted its first international competition for Post−doc research fellowships, advertising positions on the most popular specific websites and with the help of the placement offices of the world's most renowned universities. Thanks to wide international diffusion and to the competitiveness of the positions offered, the first call received a remarkable response and applications of a very high standard.

Competitions are open and transparent, according to recommendations of the European Commission enclosed in the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment. Selection procedures are based on peer review criteria, and on the possibility to thoroughly negotiate the position, on the basis of international standards and salary levels.

Selection Outcomes:

A total of 190 applications were received. 131 (69%) were submitted by young researchers at present working abroad, 26 of when (13.3%) were submitted by Italian researchers.
  • Economics, Markets and Institutions: 122 applications (26 Italian)
  • Computer Science and Engineering: 38 applications (22 Italian)
  • Biorobotics Science and Engineering: 16 applications (4 Italian)
  • Political Systems and Institutional Change: 9 applications (1 from abroad)
  • Technology and Management of Cultural Heritage: 6 applications (2 Italian)

Focus on the area of Economics Markets Institutions:

The 122 applications received for the area of Economics, Markets, Institutions (EMI) are distributed as follows:
  • 36 applications from leading US universities.
  • 39 applications from non-Italian European universities (except Italy )
  • 21 applications from the rest of the world.
33% of applications received came from candidates that have achieved their Ph.D in one of the top 100 world Universities (Academic Ranking of World Universities - Institute of Higher Education , Shanghai Jiao Tong University http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005Main.htm ).
